Short Term Treatment For Active Duodenal Ulcer

If you are seeking short-term treatment for an Active Duodenal Ulcer and you are an adult, the typical dose is 20 mg once per day. Many people heal in 4 weeks or so, but others require an extra 4 weeks of Prilosec treatment.

Treatment for Duodenal Ulcers Due To H. Pylori

If you are treating Duodenal Ulcers Due To H. Pylori with Prilosec and clarithromycin, the typical dosage is 40 mg of Prilosec once per day and 500 mg of clarithromycin 3 times per day for 2 weeks, followed by 20 mg of Prilosec once per day for an extra 14 days. If you are also taking amoxicillin, the usual dosage is 20 mg of Prilosec, 500 mg of clarithromycin, and 1000 mg of amoxicillin two times a day for 10 days, followed by 20 mg of Prilosec once a day for an extra 18 days.

The typical dose for treating a gastric ulcer is 40 mg of Prilosec once each day for 4-8 weeks.

If you are treating Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD, the typical dose is 20 mg each day for up to 4 weeks. For erosive esophagitis with GERD symptoms, the typical dose is 20 mg each day for 4-8 weeks. You can continue the dose to maintain healing.

If you are treating Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions, the typical starting dose is 60 mg once per day of Prilosec. If you take more than 80 mg each day, your doctor will divide the total into small doses. Your dosing will be based on what you need.

Treating Children 2-16 Years Old

If you are treating a child that is 2-16 years old for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Acid-Related Disorders, keep the following in mind. Children that weigh less than 44 pounds usually take a dose of 10 mg each day. Children that weigh more than 44 pounds, usually take 20 mg a day. For children that have erosive esophagitis, your physician will determine the dose that is necessary for your child based on his/her weight.

Please note that the effectiveness and safety of Prilosec have not been studied in kids under 2 years old. In addition, you should not give Prilosec to a child under the age of 18, unless your doctor approves it.
